Wildland firefighters risk their lives every single day — not only from flames, but from the toxic smoke that can cause cancer and other serious health problems. Yet right now, the U.S. Forest Service doesn’t provide them with respirators to filter out deadly chemicals.
That’s unacceptable. And SEEC members are leading the charge to fix it.
SEEC Member Rep. Maxine Dexter, a pulmonologist, is demanding the Forest Service do more than just “make masks available.” She knows firsthand that specialized respirators save lives — and she’s pressing the agency to make sure every firefighter gets the protection they need on the job.
The contrast couldn’t be clearer: while Democrats are fighting for safety, House Republicans have proposed slashing the Forest Service budget by 76% — after Trump already cut more than 1,400 fire-certified federal jobs.
Thanks to your help in 2024, SEEC PAC was able to re-elect over 95% of our pro-environment members to the U.S. House of Representatives — defying the odds on a night where Democrats lost seats. Now we are counting on you to help our SEEC members pass climate, clean energy and environmental justice policies in the 119th Congress while we continue fighting for a sustainable future.
