On July 8th at 7:30 pm EST Indiana Young Democrats will be hosting an Executive Committee Meeting. Meetings are open to the public, and we will be electing officers for vacant seats at the meeting. Please spread the word to fellow Young Democrats and be sure to show up to the virtual meeting so you can  play a role in helping Young Democrats win statewide!

The Executive Committee of Indiana Young Democrats and its officers help guide the organization and represent the interests of Young Hoosier Democrats all across the state. We aim to be a diverse coalition who believe in equality, justice, and a fair shake for all people. We can't do this work if those that are able don't play a role, if you have the time to support the mission of IYD we hope you will join us for our first Executive Committee Meeting of 2020!

Redistricting is next year, so if we want to end Republican gerrymandering, we must elect just ONE MORE candidate for State Representative to break the Republican's Supermajority. A Supermajority for Republicans mean they can convene meetings of the Legislature WITHOUT DEMOCRATS PRESENT. Republicans can draw districts and choose their voters without a single word on the matter coming from Democrats. That's wrong, and Young Democrats around the state are stepping up and leading the way in some of the most competitive races across Indiana.

The 4th of July, much like Junteteenth, presents a moment for a nationwide examination of our freedoms, the steps we have taken to achieve the freedoms we do have, and the changes we still have to take to ensure freedom for everyone. Racist, undemocratic policies, like Donald Trump's opposition to nationwide mail-in voting, stand in the way of Americans exercising their right to participate in democracy. Over the past few months, we have been exposed to both the horrendous shortage in our national safety net and the racism that exists within our institutions.

Freedom means having leaders that protect our nation from biological, environmental, and natural disasters. When a biological disaster like Coronavirus strikes our world, we need leaders who will fight to ensure that our citizens basic needs are met and that we are not choosing between our health, our wages and our lives. Freedom means deconstructing our institutions that exhibit racist outcomes and rebuilding those institutions with the input of all people, especially those who have been oppressed for generations in the United States. When institutions produce racist outcomes, or people of color in the United States are dying at higher rates at the hands of the government and systematically racist policies, nobody is truly free.

This 4th of July, we have hope in a more free, democratic country for all people. We believe that our freedoms as a country are to this moment imperfect, and we believe Black Lives Matter.

Democratically yours,

Indiana Young Democrats
