Friend --

This weekend, we recognize American independence. That also means we must recognize and interrogate the paradox of American freedom. Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness were guaranteed for some on July 4, 1776 - but not for all.

History lays bare white supremacy’s role in keeping our democracy from achieving its highest ideals. And we now find ourselves at an inflection point in our shared history.

An urgent movement for racial justice is being led by a new generation of change makers - many who are members of the NLC Family. Across the country, NLC alumni are working on anti-racist policies in their communities. They are providing care to their neighbors in the face of a global pandemic. And they are protecting the hard fought right for Americans to cast their votes at the ballot box.

Together, this new generation will lead our country towards a better future, where democracy is redefined because of their courageous actions.

We hope that you can join us on August 8th and 9th at NLC Convention: At Home, where many of these leaders will share their vision of a more equitable America. When you learn more about the power of their stories below, we know you’ll see why it is an honor to serve alongside NLC’s change agents.

Onward,

Clare Bresnahan English
NLC President & CEO
