In Eastern Chad, pregnant refugees are being hit hard by the humanitarian funding crisis. Health centers across the region have been forced to cut their staff, despite a growing population of displaced families.
“There are too many women and not enough midwives,” Amina told us. She had been waiting to receive prenatal care at the Farchana Health Center. Last year, the center had 32 employees. This year, there are only 10 left to care for 60,000 people.

Midwife Prisca is surrounded by women waiting for sexual and reproductive health services at the Farchana camp.
Understaffed clinics, as well as out-of-stock medicines, supply deficits, and equipment shortages, all increase the risk that life-threatening complications will go untreated.
"At first, several partners were there to support us. But with the funding freeze, they withdrew or drastically reduced their support," explained Dr. Mahamoud Adam Ahmat.
UNFPA continues to do all we can to support women and girls in Chad by providing personnel, equipment, kits, and training in sexual and reproductive health. Yet, the country already has one of the highest maternal death rates in the world — a situation that is likely to continue to deteriorate given the extreme loss of resources.
Fewer trained staff. Dwindling essential medicines. Inadequate health facilities. A drastic loss in funding. Women and girls in Chad depend on these healthcare services, and without proper resources, they are forced to go without. Your gift today can make the difference in their survival. We hope you’ll open your heart to help close the funding gap and deliver the lifesaving relief they need: [[link removed]?]
