Hi John,

The Animal Liberation Online Assembly is BACK -- at a new time! Every month, we unite people from around the world in our global community for animal liberation. Join us the second Saturday of each month on Zoom for two hours of learning, music, and community. Here are the details for this month’s ALOA!

What: Animal Liberation Online Assembly: Why Animals Need Us To Confront Racism

When: Saturday, July 11 - 11am PDT (2pm EDT)

Where: On Zoom - join at dxe.io/ALOAzoom

The Movement for Black Lives has successfully forced the United States (and world) to reckon with its pervasive racism. Yet even the animal and environmental activists most supportive of #BlackLivesMatter would be surprised to hear that racism is the greatest threat to their own movements.

That is the dire warning political researcher and UC Berkeley professor, Ian Haney López, has for us. In his latest book Merge Left, Haney López shows how greedy economic elites weaponize racial resentment to stay in power and maximize their own profits. These elites prevent the government from taking action on economic justice, the climate emergency, and animal rights even when these causes are supported by a supermajority of people in the US. Then they point the finger at working class immigrants and people of color, stirring up racial hysteria to keep voters distracted.

But there is hope. Although conventional wisdom holds that talking about race is divisive, Ian presents a new way to build progressive narratives which appeal equally to white, Black, and brown people living in the US, without compromising on truth-telling.

We’ll also be joined by the UC Berkeley Black Students Union to hear how we can support one of their campaigns. Join the Animal Liberation Online Assembly to learn how we can incorporate this vital truth into our message of animal liberation.

See you next Saturday!

In Solidarity,
Johanna
