Securing Federal Relief for Families

In August, historic flooding hit southeast Wisconsin, affecting the lives of thousands of working families.

Following the disaster, the entire Wisconsin congressional delegation wrote to FEMA and the President requesting federal support for Wisconsin families. Earlier this month, the President authorized an initial $29.8 million in federal aid to assist individual recovery efforts.

This week, I joined FEMA and local officials in Hales Corners to discuss available supports for Wisconsin families and the upcoming federal aid deadline. Listen to our discussion here or click on the video below.

If you or someone you know was affected by the August storms, please see my recent newsletter or visit my website here.

I want to hear from you:

Keeping the Government Open

Last week, the House passed a continuing resolution (CR) to keep the government open and prevent a lapse in funding at the end of the month. This clean CR does not make any substantive policy changes and keeps the government open and funded at current levels through November 21, 2025. This is a stopgap measure while Congress continues to negotiate 2026 spending levels. The Senate has not yet passed a continuing resolution.

Government shutdowns rarely benefit Americans. Decades of dysfunction and continued brinksmanship do not help deliver policy solutions that Wisconsin families need. This week, I introduced legislation alongside Senator Ron Johnson to reform the appropriations process and eliminate the potential for a government shutdown. Read more about it here.

Under this proposal, if funding has not been authorized for the upcoming fiscal year, an automatic two-week continuing resolution would go into effect. This means that the federal government would continue to be funded at existing levels while Congress continues to finalize the upcoming fiscal year's spending levels. A similar process is used in Wisconsin for the state budget.

Hearing from You

My priority is being available and accessible. Hearing from our community allows me to provide meaningful solutions to the problems we face. This week, I met with employees, working families, and seniors across our district.

This included stops meeting employees at CJW Distributors, a 5th-generation family business, in Mount Pleasant and DeltaHawk, a small engine manufacturer, in Racine. It was great to see the Wisconsin workforce in action and discuss how Congress can support our workers.

On August 14, the Social Security Administration celebrated its 90th anniversary. I joined AARP members this week to celebrate this anniversary and discuss my work to protect and preserve this vital program.
