My home state of Georgia has a long, shameful history of voter suppression. And we see that history continue today, with Republicans mounting a recent purge of nearly half a million voter registrations. But in parallel, Georgia has a storied history of resistance against systemic barriers to the ballot box. And that is the legacy we must look to, and be inspired by, as free and fair elections are at risk around the country.

Today, the Trump Regime and its MAGA allies are barreling our country toward an autocracy. And right now is a critical moment to follow in the footsteps of those who came before us and organized for our freedom to vote. To abide by the words of the late Georgia Congressman John Lewis and make good trouble so that our democracy truly works for everyone.

That’s why we must support groups like Fair Fight that do the vital work of making our democracy live up to its promise, tackling the rise of authoritarianism, and ensuring free and fair elections.

When I founded Fair Fight, it was with a basic goal to defend a basic principle: our freedom to vote. And right now, under the Trump Regime, Republicans in Georgia, throughout the South, and across the country are even more emboldened to cling to power through restricting access to the ballot box.

This summer, Fair Fight mounted an aggressive outreach effort to help Georgia voters find out how to stay on the rolls ahead of the GOP’s massive registration purge. And as Republicans continue to push extreme voter suppression plans, from a modern-day poll tax in the so-called “SAVE Act” to Trump’s threats to end mail voting, Fair Fight continues to mobilize our movement for free and fair elections, with equal access to the ballot box.

The truth is that Republicans are afraid of what will happen when we tap into our voting power and move our state, and our nation, toward a truly multiracial, inclusive, and representative democracy. That was the vision of democracy organizers and changemakers like John Lewis dedicated their entire lives to. Now it’s our turn.
