Dear John,

It’s campaigning season, y’all. TakeAction members made strides in September toward real wins in our communities – from organizing alongside educators for smaller class sizes and ELL and special ed caseloads in Minneapolis Public Schools, to winning timely repairs for renters in Duluth and knocking doors for a new mayor of Minneapolis.

Read on for updates, ways to act with us, and an exclusive interview with Duluth Tenants member, Mikaela Williams. 🐺

Whether you’re a member of a TakeAction Minnesota team or part of our general membership, we’re glad you’re here.

We’re making moves: Timely team updates and calls to action

🗳️ Duluth Tenants kicks off early voting!

On Friday, September 19, Duluth Tenants members celebrated the start of early voting with a press conference and by going to City Hall to cast the first YES votes on Question 1, Duluth Right to Repair. Then, we spent the weekend doing what we do best: talking to our neighbors. To date, we’ve knocked almost 10,000 doors!

Watch us on the news and sign up for our October general meeting, which includes hearing directly from Duluth Fire Department’s Life Safety division. Join us for a canvass shift.

🧑‍🏫 MFPS meets with the School Board
MPS families are bringing our demands for smaller class sizes and ELL and special ed caseloads directly to school board members in meetings this month and next. We’re talking to them about their role in Minneapolis Federation of Educator’s contract negotiations as we campaign alongside MFE for contract-enforceable language to make real progress on these issues.

This is one of the most important organizing moments of the semester. MPS parents: Sign up to join a meeting with your school board member and check out our upcoming events. We want to know how back-to-school is going for your family. Use this form to report an issue.

🎤 Parents, we want to hear from you!

MNUP is getting into formation to take back our tax dollars from Trump’s tax giveaways to the ultra-wealthy and ensure they’re invested in US.

Take our quick, 5-question survey to tell us where those funds should go to make the biggest impact on your life. Join our October 14 meeting.

🫂 TCUP members support each other in pods

“Pods” are smaller teams within a larger union structure – a strategy inspired by our union siblings. Right now, pod members are supporting each other to use the TCUP advance because it helps to know you have a team behind you.

We’re chatting with: Mikaela Williams, Duluth Tenants

What's your team and, if you're into astrology, your sign? What's a topic you could talk about for hours on end? Duluth Tenants! Scorpio :) I think I could probably talk about my dog for hours on end …

What's a core memory of your time with Duluth Tenants so far? It has to be the first time I went door knocking with Duluth Tenants back in October of 2023. I had just moved to Duluth and was not expecting it to be so cold already. Out on the doors I could barely talk because of how cold my face was.

Who is a person you've met through organizing and why are they special to you? DyAnna has become a real friend and organizing mentor to me over the past two years. ❤️ She’s such an amazing leader and super funny, so I’m happy to have met her!

How is what you're learning through organizing showing up in your day-to-day life? What I’m learning through organizing has made me think differently at work about how we translate research back to our community partners and what deliverables will actually be helpful in bringing the changes they want to see to their communities.

What does the world you're fighting for look like, feel like, in the day-to-day? How can people act with you right now to get closer to realizing that vision? The world I’m fighting for is one where housing is not a commodity – one where my neighbors don’t have apartments without real windows or go months without repairs because their landlords only see tenants as passive income. People can act by talking to their neighbors! If you’re in Duluth, vote YES on Question 1 by November 4th. ;)

We’re sharing: Our 2025 Busy Voter’s Guide

Early voting is OPEN. Make your voting plan in less than 5 minutes with our Busy Voter’s Guide (featuring beautiful illustrations of our members by artist Sean Lark Reece!).

Here’s what to watch for on your ballots this fall.

In Duluth:

✅ Vote YES on Question 1 to pass Duluth Right to Repair

In Minneapolis:

✅ Rank Omar Fateh #1 for mayor
✅ Rank Jazz Hampton and DeWayne Davis as #2 or #3
🚫 Don’t rank Jacob Frey

In Saint Paul:

✅ Vote YES to fund our schools
✅ Vote YES to approve administrative citations so the City can hold bad bosses and corporate landlords accountable when they break the law
