Unclaimed Property Help

Recently, my office had the opportunity to assist a constituent in her 70s with a particularly challenging case involving the Pennsylvania Bureau of Unclaimed Property. I’m sharing her story because it highlights the kind of real, hands-on help our office provides.

The unclaimed property was a significant insurance policy payment originally intended to cover her late mother’s funeral expenses. The funeral home never cashed the check and went out of business decades ago.

The constituent was quickly overwhelmed trying to claim the funds herself and contacted our  office. My staff was able to contact the insurance company’s unclaimed property division for records, retrieve estate documents from the County Department of Court Records, and worked directly with the claims examiner at the Bureau of Unclaimed Property to complete the claims process.

Thanks to this effort, the constituent will now receive $3,600—far more than she expected when she first received the notice.

She told us, “Working with your legislative office was a great idea. I never would have figured this out on my own!”

We want all of our constituents to know whether you’re dealing with something as simple as replacing an illegible license plate or as complex as a long-lost insurance claim, our office is here to help you navigate state government. We're proud to serve you—and we’re only a phone call or email away.

SW PA United Way Meal Kits Packed

SW PA United Way Meal Kits Packed

Earlier this month, my staff volunteered at the United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania’s Fall Meal Kit Packing Event at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center. Volunteers created individual meal boxes from donations that will be distributed by area agencies throughout the fall.

Having enough to eat is vital for success in school and life, yet many working families are struggling more than ever, especially as they equip kids to head back to school. Thank you to all the volunteers who were part of this hands-on effort to support our neighbors in need.

La Roche University Welcomes a New President!

Earlier this month, I had the honor of joining the LaRoche University community for the Inauguration of their new President, Dr. Christina Clark. Dr. Clark is a compassionate leader who is dedicated to LaRoche’s core values of inclusion, integrity, compassion, justice, and peace.

I’m grateful for her willingness to be a leader in difficult times. I look forward to working with her to strengthen educational opportunities for all students here in our region and beyond, and I’m excited to see what her life of service will bring as LaRoche opens this new chapter. Congratulations Dr. Clark!

Celebration Tour with Blawnox VFC’s FRB Williams!

Last week I joined the Blawnox Volunteer Fire Company for an Allegheny River tour on Marine 111, the new Blawnox Fire Rescue Boat named the “FRB Williams.” I was proud to help Blawnox secure the $150,000 DCED funding needed to purchase this vessel and was honored and surprised last year when it was named after me!

The FRB Williams is already a vital part of water emergency response in the region - assisting in dozens of emergencies this year. If you are interested in giving back to your community consider volunteering with Blawnox VFC. They need volunteers of all kinds - not just emergency Fire and Water rescue!

Contact [email protected] or go to https://www.volunteerfirefighter.org/blawnox to get started!

Legislative Update

Senator Lindsey M. Williams to Introduce Legislation Addressing Skyrocketing Electricity Costs

I’m introducing a package of legislation to protect Pennsylvania utility customers from skyrocketing electricity costs caused by data centers.

Our families should not be paying more for their electricity because enormous data centers might move into our neighborhoods—and they certainly should not be subsidizing electricity costs for giant corporations. Western Pennsylvania has a long history of prioritizing the needs of industry billionaires at the expense of the people who built this country. This is our chance to reverse that trend and put the needs of our working families, our seniors, and everyday people first, ahead of corporate profits.

According to the PJM Independent Market Monitor, data center load growth is the primary reason for recent increases in capacity prices. If not for data centers, capacity prices would have been lower, leading to lower energy bills for Pennsylvania households.

Rising energy bills mean that more and more people will need help keeping their lights and heat on. But commercial data centers – the entities causing energy bills to rise – do not pay into Pennsylvania’s customer assistance programs (CAP). Rather, the cost of these programs falls exclusively on residential customers, including the low-income customers most likely to need the assistance.

Allegheny County United Way 211 consistently reports Electric Service Payment Assistance among its top identified needs from callers. With federal Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) funding in question for coming years, local customer assistance programs are more critical than ever.

This legislation is a first step towards keeping the lights on for our seniors, families, and children, while ensuring that our largest users of electricity are not paying the least.

News You Can Use

988 hotline

If you or someone you know is in crisis, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline or chat live at 988lifeline.org. You can also visit SpeakingOfSuicide.com/resources for additional support.

PA Call Centers Help LGBTQ+ People in Crisis After Federal 988 Change

Recently, the Trump Administration eliminated the option that connected callers to 988, the Suicide and Crisic Lifeline, directly to the Trevor Project’s LGBTQ+ Suicide Lifeline, a hotline for LGBTQ+ youth in crisis. Following this change, Governor Shapiro directed the PA Department of Human Services (DHS) to work with call centers in the state to provide tailored support and resources that help LGBTQ+ populations that are especially at risk of suicide.

Through a partnership with Thomas Jefferson University, Pennsylvania 988 operators are now trained on trauma-informed care, the prevalence of suicidality and behavioral health crises among the LGBTQ+ community, and information on how LGBTQ+ people identify themselves.

Callers to 988 do not have to identify as LGBTQ+ when calling; however, the Pennsylvania 988 call centers have information and resources to serve this population. The Trevor Project's Lifeline can also still be reached independently of 988, via 1-866-488-7386.
