A Note from the Desk of Congresswoman Julia Letlow
September has been a full and productive month serving the 5th District, through both votes in Congress and listening sessions in Louisiana. This week I had the chance to visit with constituents in Baton Rouge, Tangipahoa Parish, East Feliciana Parish and Livingston Parish so I could learn more about issues facing our district.
One of my most important responsibilities is to ensure the federal government remains open to continue serving Americans. I supported the passage of a Continuing Resolution (CR) to prevent a shutdown while we continue to work on long-term funding. I’m pleased to report that all 12 individual appropriations bills have now passed out of my Appropriations Committee, an important step in making the government more accountable to taxpayers through both responsible investments and cuts to wasteful spending.
Recently I’ve also had the privilege of participating in bipartisan conversations on women’s health, a passion of mine. From hearing advocates share personal stories to seeing the innovative work at Woman’s Hospital in Baton Rouge, I was reminded of the importance of advancing research, supporting early detection of cancers, and ensuring quality care for women across our communities.
Sincerely,
Julia Letlow, Ph.D.
Member of Congress
Responsibly Funding the Government
The House of Representatives recently passed a short-term continuing resolution to ensure the government remains operational and essential services like veterans’ care continue without interruption. While there is still work to be done, this step provides the time necessary for both chambers to come together and complete the appropriations process. The Senate has until September 30 to act in order to prevent a government shutdown. Funding the government should not be about party politics, but keeping our commitments to the American people. As we move forward, I remain committed to working toward a full-year budget through a transparent process that cuts wasteful spending and ensures fiscal responsibility.
Advancing Women’s Health
Recently, I had the honor of joining actresses Mandy Moore and Lupita Nyong’o for a bipartisan conversation about women’s health research. I enjoyed listening to their powerful personal stories and sharing my perspective on the critical work ahead to strengthen research and care for women across our country. During the September district work week, I also had the opportunity to visit Woman’s Hospital in Baton Rouge to see the innovative work they are doing to provide world-class care to women throughout Louisiana. Specifically, I learned about the resources offered to treat diseases like breast and cervical cancer, in which early detection is crucial to effective treatment. As a woman, a mother, and a legislator, I am deeply committed to ensuring that treating diseases like breast cancer remains a priority in Congress. By working together, we can secure the funding and resources needed to advance life-saving research, promote early detection, and improve the health outcomes of women everywhere.

Remembering Charlie Kirk
In recent days, we were reminded of the importance of civility in our public discourse. Charlie Kirk dedicated his life to engaging young people in the political process and advancing conservative principles. The tragic act of cowardice that ended his life is a sobering reminder that political violence has no place in our democracy. Having worked in higher education, I admire the work he did to create more spaces for free speech on college campuses. Our system was built to resolve differences through debate, dialogue, and ultimately the ballot box, not through intimidation or harm. I firmly believe our nation is strongest when we come together peacefully, guided by faith, respect, and a shared love of country. Securing the Border and Reducing Illegal Immigration
Louisiana is proud to play a leading role in supporting President Trump’s efforts to secure our border and restore public safety. With the recent opening of the new ICE detention facility at Angola known as the “Louisiana Lockup,” our state now has the capacity to securely house hundreds more criminal illegal immigrants awaiting deportation. This partnership with ICE, supported through new federal funding from the One Big Beautiful Bill, ensures that violent offenders are off our streets and sends a clear message that illegal immigration will not be tolerated. Working hand in hand with the Trump administration and Governor Jeff Landry, Louisiana is Making America Safe Again by giving law enforcement the tools they need, strengthening public safety for families, and reaffirming that we are a nation of laws. Check out my recent article in the Washington Times about Louisiana's contribution to the safety of our country.
Supporting Louisiana Farmers
Last week, I filed the Farm Rescue Act to provide more timely support for commodity producers who are under increasing pressure from rising input costs. My legislation would amend the Price Loss Coverage (PLC) program to give eligible farmers the option of receiving an advance payment of what they’re projected to receive for the current crop year. This would provide more timely support for our Louisiana growers in time for the 2026 planting season, easing cash flow concerns and putting them in a stronger position moving forward.
