Weekly InSight
This week, we highlight the grim security failings across the region, as Honduras essentially legalized impunity, police in São Paulo became more murderous than their Rio colleagues and Mexico City's public security secretary barely survived a brazen assassination attempt along a major thoroughfare. We also explore how gold prices are fueling illegal mining in Peru and where Venezuela's bird traffickers send their prey.

InSight Crime was delighted to partner with Quinto Elemento Lab to publish their excellent investigation into the failings of Mexico City's highly touted criminal investigation database. We look forward to bringing you fascinating content from across the region due to several new partnerships signed during the lockdown.

A Fractured System – Mexico’s Criminal Investigation Network

It was touted as the platform that streamlines criminal investigations in Mexico City. It was going to bring the city into the new digital era, streamline the infamous bureaucracy that has for years kept justice out of reach. It was supposed to be a platform worthy of the most important city in the country: an international tourism hub, home to the country’s president and a business nerve-center of the continent.

Our Interns

InSight Crime’s interns are like no other – global, multilingual, and deeply interested in the dynamics of organized crime. And now we plan to create an internship program like no other, with help from a grant from the Seattle International Foundation.

Interns are crucial to our organization: collecting information from open sources, doing research and interviews for our long-term projects, writing for our website, monitoring regional news, tracking social media, and providing logistical support, among other responsibilities.

Of some 100 interns who have joined InSight Crime, 20 percent have gone on to work full time with the organization. Others have gone to positions in non-governmental organizations, academia, think tanks and government.
