John,
You’ve probably heard the news about the indictment of former FBI Director James Comey. [1]
As a believer in the promise of our democracy, this is deeply troubling news. And I’m sure you feel the same.
Comey’s indictment is not a show of justice — it’s a show of naked political revenge. Presidents should never order the prosecutions of their personal or political enemies, nor should prosecutors be punished for refusing to pursue baseless charges. But that’s exactly what we’re witnessing right now.
What’s worse is that President Trump has spent years calling for Comey’s prosecution, and when career prosecutors concluded the case was meritless, he fired the U.S. attorney who resisted and installed a loyalist to deliver the indictment he wanted.
This is not how the rule of law works. It’s how authoritarians operate.
This is bigger than one indictment. This is using our justice system to settle a score and a clear abuse of power.
That’s why Issue One has been working around the clock to expand our Check the Exec campaign and protect our system of checks and balances so that no one branch of government becomes too powerful. [2] We’re calling for Congress to reassert its constitutional authority, for the restoration of our critical checks and balances, and for the prevention of abuses of power.
This work is more critical than ever — especially when we see news like Comey’s indictment. But it takes a lot of resources to do this work and we need your help.
Can you rush a donation today to help power Issue One and our Check the Exec campaign? We need you in this movement to uphold and strengthen our democracy.
Thanks for all you do,
Alix Fraser VP of Advocacy
