Leaves
*Keep Leaves Out of Streets and Storm Drains*

As leaves fall, they can harm our lakes, rivers, and wetlands by adding unwanted nutrients. When leaves wash into storm drains, they pollute our waters, causing algae blooms, low oxygen levels, fish kills, and unsafe swimming conditions.

*Do your part:*

* Rake and properly dispose of leaves, grass clippings, and yard debris.
* Compost yard waste at home to create free, nutrient-rich fertilizer.
* Drop off waste at local compost sites (some are free or low-cost).
* Till leaves into your garden to boost soil health.
* Short on time? Hire a service or connect with local volunteers for help.

Let’s protect our waters—keep leaves off streets and out of drains.

Trees
*Autumn is a Great Time to Plant Trees*

Fall is here, though Mendota Heights is still at 10–25% peak color, according to the MN DNR Fall Color Report. As days shorten, trees stop producing chlorophyll, revealing vibrant reds, yellows, and golds—especially when paired with sunny days and cool nights.

Cooler temps also make fall ideal for planting trees. While maples are known for their color, many native trees shine too—like Honey Locust and Basswood (golden yellow), Red Oaks (bright red to burgundy), and White Oaks (yellow to dark scarlet).

Ivy Hills Park
*Ivy Hills Park Eagle Scout Pollinator Planting Project*

On Saturday, September 20, Wes Hendel completed his Eagle Scout Service Project by planting over 250 square feet of pollinator habitat in Ivy Hills Park. The planting site is located near the stormwater pond along the woodland edge, where diseased ash trees were recently removed.

With the help of about 20 scouts and volunteers, Wes planted 215 native flowers, grasses, and shrubs to support pollinators with food and habitat. The group also removed invasive buckthorn from the area.
