John,
It’s World Contraception Day, and we’d like to take a moment of gratitude for contraception and the leaders around the country defending access to it in the face of renewed attacks.
Contraception is essential healthcare. It allows people to plan their own futures, and grow their families on their own terms. But even though 9 in 10 Americans support legal access to contraception, extremist politicians are still pushing legislation that puts access in danger.
Some fast facts on the state of affairs:
- Only 16 states, plus Washington, D.C., have laws that actively protect contraceptive access.
- 16 states actively restrict access to contraception, through laws that require parental consent for minors to access birth control, allow pharmacists to refuse to fill prescriptions on the basis of personal beliefs, and more.
- Trump’s targeted defunding of Planned Parenthood will prevent 1.1 million Planned Parenthood patients who use Medicaid from accessing the care they need via these clinics, including contraception.
The good news is that we can fight back—and we are!
In Virginia, where Gov. Glenn Youngkin has twice vetoed legislation that would safeguard the right to contraception, we’re supporting a state-wide slate of candidates who will fight for our healthcare: Abigail Spanberger, Ghazala Hashmi, and Jay Jones.
In fact, Ghazala Hashmi, now running for Lieutenant Governor, wrote the bill that Gov. Youngkin vetoed!
And we’re working diligently to oust several GOP incumbents in the Virginia House of Delegates, who voted against the right to contraception and are up for reelection this November.
When access to contraception is overwhelmingly popular, it’s easy to see it as a settled issue. But the truth is, we’re from it: Just weeks ago, the Trump administration referred to a stockpile of contraceptives they destroyed as “abortifacient birth control,” indicating that they’ll continue to attack access to certain contraceptives by incorrectly claiming that they cause abortions.
That’s why on this World Contraception Day, we’re asking for your help. Your donation will power our work to defeat anti-choice politicians, elect proactively pro-choice leaders like Senator Hashmi, and ensure contraception access is protected across the country.
Thank you for standing with us, today and every day!
In solidarity,
Maris Nyhart
