The situation in Texas is becoming increasingly dire. Women in red states need our support.

As of LAST WEEK: the majority-male Texas Legislature has passed a ‘bounty hunter’ bill that would allow private citizens to sue ANYONE for providing abortion medication in Texas. And, Governor Greg Abbott has officially signed it into law.

According to the Amarillo Globe News, "Abortion-inducing medication is already outlawed in Texas and for years, Texas has allowed private citizens to sue abortion providers. The bill does not introduce new bans to abortion and it applies an existing legal tool — private enforcement — to the abortion pill ban more specifically. But, it introduces to the abortion fight a novel 'bounty hunter' provision by giving a monetary award to those who bring a lawsuit and are not related to any part of the pregnancy."

Representative Jeff Leach introduced the bill (why are male politicians obsessed with further limiting women’s bodily autonomy?).

It is dangerous to be a woman living in a red state – and while Texas certainly has some of the worst laws for women, we’re seeing more laws like this one pop up across America. This is only the latest in the larger story of Texas’s Attorney General Ken Paxton working to limit women’s rights. Earlier this year, a Texas midwife was ARRESTED and CHARGED for performing abortions. This was made possible by Texas’s total abortion ban, which has now made it legal for random citizens to pursue legal action against providers, aiming to scare doctors from offering this often lifesaving care. The ban, which prohibits all abortions – even in cases of rape or incest – is among the most restrictive in the country.

As reported by ProPublica, pregnancy has become more dangerous in Texas since the state banned abortion in 2021. Sepsis rates increased by over 50% among women hospitalized after losing their pregnancies in the second trimester, according to the study.

Women in red states need our help. The male and anti-choice majorities across these states are creating dangerous and FATAL realities for women. We cannot stand by as these women contend with laws written and signed by MEN.
