As President Trump and Washington Republicans take their redistricting efforts across the country, Texans are still fighting back.
Immediately after adoption of the newly drawn Texas congressional map, six plaintiff groups acting on behalf of minority Texans filed motions to block use of the new map in the 2026 elections. Each of the plaintiff groups has challenged the maps on the legal basis of illegal minority vote dilution and racial gerrymandering in violation of the 14th and 15th Amendments to the Constitution. These groups presented their motions to a three-judge panel federal court in El Paso, which heard challenges to the existing maps earlier this year and currently holds jurisdiction over redistricting in Texas.
A court hearing on the request to stop the new map from going into effect for the 2026 elections will begin next week, on October 1 and is scheduled to last up to ten days.
As a lawyer, I know how much work goes into preparing for an injunction hearing like this. It’s essentially a short trial. Not surprisingly, there are lots of expenses for those who are challenging the maps. From the lawyers to expert witnesses to travel expenses to and from El Paso, challenging the maps comes with costs of all kinds.
That’s why I am so grateful for those who are helping make sure that these challenges move forward, despite the cost. The Texas Justice Fund has helped lead the fight to ensure our maps are fair, and is supporting the efforts to challenge these maps in court.
I am making a contribution to the Texas Justice Fund , and I hope you will join me in doing so. You can click here to make a contribution to the Texas Justice Fund through our campaign. Every contribution through this link will be directed to TJF to fund the fight for fair maps. [[link removed]]
Next week’s hearing is the next step in a long process in the fight for fair maps, fair representation, and fair and free elections. We cannot underestimate those that want to undermine those principles. But we also cannot underestimate the strength we have when we come together and do all we can to protect our principles and the people who need us now more than ever to live up to them.
Supporting the Texas Justice Fund is critical to that end. Please join me in supporting TJF today.
Together we can do anything,
