What Independence Day means to ConservAmerica

As we prepare to celebrate July 4 this year, we at ConservAmerica believe it is worth reflecting on the importance of our nation’s independent founding, free from the constraints and strictures of high taxation, an overbearing federal government, and the inequities of feudalism. This radical idea by the colonists almost 250 years ago, declaring independence from Great Britain, resulted in one of the most successful experiments in human history— the most flourishing democracy humankind had ever known.

During these times of social tumult, we believe it is important to take stock in what freedom and liberty mean in terms of conservation and the environment. As Conservatives who care about the environment, what we do is not just purely about the environment, but rather it’s about improving the human condition based on fundamental principles that continue to make this country so great. Toward that end, we often review the ten principles espoused by conservative icon Russell Kirk, which we believe ought to guide our nation and our political leaders if we are to remain a flourishing and free people.

  • First, the conservative believes that there exists an enduring moral order. That order is made for man, and man is made for it: human nature is a constant, and moral truths are permanent.

  • Second, the conservative adheres to custom, convention, and continuity.

  • Third, conservatives believe in what may be called the principle of prescription.

  • Fourth, conservatives are guided by their principle of prudence.

  • Fifth, conservatives pay attention to the principle of variety.

  • Sixth, conservatives are chastened by their principle of imperfectability.

  • Seventh, conservatives are persuaded that freedom and property are closely linked.

  • Eighth, conservatives uphold voluntary community, quite as they oppose involuntary collectivism.

  • Ninth, the conservative perceives the need for prudent restraints upon power and upon human passions.

  • Tenth, the thinking conservative understands that permanence and change must be recognized and reconciled in a vigorous society.
