John, Common Cause just delivered a major legal win in our efforts to ensure a free and fair 2026 election. [1]
Here's what happened: Donald Trump has spent years trying to undermine trust in our elections – and after his return to power, he instructed the Department of Justice to help substantiate his conspiracy theories.
Why? Because he thinks any vote that isn't for him is illegitimate.
So, his administration is demanding states hand over huge swaths of voter data – including names, addresses, birthdates, and even driver’s license and Social Security numbers. It’s an outrageous overreach that puts every voter at risk of fraud and abuse.
And when Trump demanded that Nebraska release its voters’ private information, we quickly sued on Monday to stop the state government from complying.
We’ve seen these attacks before. Trump tried to push a similar scheme during his first term and failed after Common Cause sued to stop it, and election officials from both parties resoundingly rejected it.
This is part of a broader plan to use government power to target communities instead of protecting them. And now, he’s using the full power of the Department of Justice to get his way.
But here’s the good news, John: our lawsuit has already disrupted Trump’s plan. Nebraska’s solicitor General has confirmed that the Secretary of State will not release any voter information to the DOJ while our case is pending – protecting voters’ privacy for now.
John, Common Cause is your watchdog against the Trump administration's attacks on our vote – because we know what's at stake if we fail.
That's why we’re so glad our lawsuit is already getting results – and so thankful to the people like you who make our work possible.
Thanks for all you do,
The team at Common Cause
P.S. We’re fighting attacks on the right to vote in courts and state legislatures from coast to coast. If you’d like to support our work to defend our elections from bad actors, please consider making a donation today >>
