Center for American Progress
Good morning John,
Our virtual lobby day for the Equality Act is coming up soon! <[link removed]>
On July 14, we’ll be asking for your help to make sure that senators support this crucially important legislation, which would provide clear and comprehensive protections for LGBTQ people nationwide. Today we’ll be highlighting why the Equality Act is an important step forward for gender justice.
First, LGBTQ rights are women’s rights.
Research by the Center for American Progress and our coalition partners has repeatedly shown that anti-LGBTQ discrimination has a disproportionate impact on LBTQ women, especially LBTQ women of color. By providing explicit nondiscrimination protections on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity, the Equality Act serves to improve the lives of millions of LBTQ women.
Second, the Equality Act expands sex-based nondiscrimination protections for all women.
The legislation would prohibit sex discrimination in public spaces and services as well as federally funded services, increasing all peoples' access to reproductive health care. Moreover, it would ensure that pharmacists are no longer able to deny patients birth control and would also address the so-called pink tax by prohibiting businesses from charging women higher prices for the same services offered to men.
The Equality Act passed the U.S. House last year with strong bipartisan support, and more than 70 percent of Americans support it. It's time for the Senate to act. Sign up here to get updates around the Equality Act, starting with a call on your senators to support it on July 14. <[link removed]>
