Significant win for reproductive rights at the UN

We're thrilled to share a groundbreaking victory: the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council adopted a resolution that—for the first time ever—explicitly recognizes sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) as human rights.

This historic step comes after weeks of intense negotiations and represents one of the most significant advancements in UN human rights standards in the last 30 years. At every stage, the Center worked closely with Member States to secure strong SRHR language in the resolution and to counter anti-rights efforts to weaken human rights commitments, providing technical expertise and mobilizing support at the highest levels.

Despite efforts by anti-rights actors to dilute the language, all hostile amendments were defeated—a powerful testament to the strength of our global movement and the importance of collaboration between civil society and Member States. This marks not only a significant advancement in global human rights standards, but also a clear political commitment to making these rights a reality for all.

Center sues Trump admin for withholding records on abortion pill

The Center for Reproductive Rights is suing the Trump administration over its failure to respond to multiple Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests seeking transparency around its re-evaluation of abortion pill safety. The lawsuit was filed September 5.

Anti-abortion extremists appear to have played a key role in driving the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) decision to re-evaluate mifepristone, a widely used abortion medication. The Center submitted FOIA requests demanding information on political, non-scientific influence in decision-making about mifepristone. Under FOIA, the public has a legal right to this information—and withholding it is against the law.

Undermining access to mifepristone is part of the Trump administration's larger strategy of under-the-radar attacks on reproductive rights, but the Center is using all legal levers to fight back.

Courts allow the Trump admin to cut Medicaid funds for reproductive health clinics.

In July, President Trump signed a sweeping spending bill that includes a provision preventing both Maine Family Planning (MFP) and Planned Parenthood from receiving federal Medicaid reimbursement for family planning and primary care services because they also provide abortion care.

The Center sued the administration on behalf of MFP, which operates 18 clinics across Maine. Despite the fact that half of MFP's patients rely on Medicaid, a federal court recently refused to stop the cuts to the organization. We appealed that ruling to the First Circuit Court of Appeals.

In a separate lawsuit, a federal court blocked the defunding of Planned Parenthood, but an appeals court has now suspended that ruling. This ruling means that MFP will be forced to turn away all of their primary care patients by the end of October, and threatens MFP's ability to continue providing other essential services.
