The Newsletter for the Movement for
Economic, Climate, and Racial Justice

Two days after Los Deliveristas and the Worker’s Justice Project successfully overturned Mayor Adam’s veto of expanded protections and fair pay for grocery delivery workers, they went straight back to City Hall to rally against unfair job deactivations that are killing delivery workers’ livelihoods. This is while members are facing threats of deportations from a rogue, authoritarian ICE agency. Los Deliveristas have a fighting spirit we all must embody: a relentless and unwavering call for worker power in the face of a billionaire takeover of our democracy. That’s why we’re proud to honor the Worker’s Justice Project at our Movement Builders Awards this year. Whether it’s Amazon, Grubhub, or Instacart, we’re standing firm against billionaire corporations who are at war with working class New Yorkers. The Dream Defenders remind us that “freedom needs fighters”. Los Delveristas are freedom fighters for all of us.

Green Healthy Schools:
Creating Safe Schools and 321,000 Green Jobs
|
On the eve of the first day of school, our Climate Works for All coalition filled the City Hall Steps to demand Green Healthy Schools. School buildings should be safe havens for students, teachers, and the broader community. Yet, decades of disinvestment have left students and teachers in deteriorating environments marked by mold, poor ventilation, failing Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems, and structural vulnerabilities that lower student performance and increase absences. Our new report details how investing in Green, Healthy Schools can:
-
make schools fully electric and fossil fuel-free, install clean solar power, and upgrade heating, cooling, and ventilation systems;
-
create 321,944 green jobs or 64,388 per year;
-
cut Department of Education energy costs in half long-term.
Through Green, Healthy Schools, New York City has a chance to confront the accelerating climate crisis while addressing its history of environmental injustice. Sign the petition to call on the next NYC Mayor to invest in Green Healthy Schools.

ALIGN at the Street Works Festival:
Climate, Arts and Community
|
To kick off NYC Climate Week, hundreds joined the Street Works Earth street festival in Jackson Heights, Queens to build community, create art, and explore how we can fight for climate justice. As co-designers of the event, ALIGN helped plan the festival and put together a “Future@Work” career fair to bring green jobs opportunities straight to our communities. We also worked with Street Works to create a Jobs Resources platform for people looking to work in progressive nonprofit, social enterprise, or justice centered work. At our table, we talked to festival participants about our Green Healthy Schools campaign to make school buildings healthy and safe. We invited community members to write a postcard to the next Mayor of NYC, sign the petition for Green Healthy Schools, and participate in a collaborative art project to “Build a Green School”.
