As we head into the Independence Day weekend, our country stands at a crossroads. One path will lead us to a better America, where equality and dignity for all are the driving forces behind our actions. The other is the path our current president wishes to take us on, and it leads to chaos and bigotry.

Where the President fails to act, we members of Congress and state and local leaders must step up to fill the void. In Congress, we are renewing the push for overdue police reforms and are recommitting ourselves to elevating leaders with the life experiences needed to address our country’s divisions. But the reality is, we need more of these leaders in Congress and in other elected positions across the country.

As chair of the Congressional Black Caucus and a proud ally of the LGBTQ community, I strongly believe that the struggles and life experiences of Black LGBTQ people make them better leaders and fierce advocates for change. But to elect these leaders – and increase representation for Black LGBTQ leaders around the country – we need your help. Black LGBTQ leaders like Ritchie Torres and Mondaire Jones, who are on track to becoming the first Black openly LGBTQ members of Congress. Like Kim Jackson, who would be the first EVER Black LGBTQ woman elected to the Georgia state Senate. Like Ashley Manlove, who is the only Black LGBTQ member of the Missouri state legislature.

This Independence Day, we can choose a new path for America. We can elect leaders who are dedicated to investing in health and ending social and economic disparities. We can stop repeating the mistakes of our past. But before we vote this November, our Black LGBTQ candidates must make it to Election Day.
