Join us for Arab American Census Week of Action, July 6-10

Hi Friend,

Our community’s visibility on the 2020 Census will determine our political power, representation in Congress, and access to vital resources for the next decade - yet we believe much of our community still remains uncounted.

That is why the Arab American Institute and our Yalla, Count Me In! partners across the country are hosting the National Arab American Census Week of Action next week, July 6 – July 10, and we need YOUR help to get out the count.

Here is how you can get involved:

  1. If you haven’t done so yet, fill out your 2020 Census form at www.my2020Census.gov. Make sure to write in your ethnic heritage and count everyone in your household, including children and newborns. Visit our website at www.yallacountmein.org for Arabic/English resources.

  2. Attend one of our many virtual events designed to answer frequently asked questions about the Census.

Monday, July 6: 1:00 PM ET - Data Security and Privacy on the U.S. Census: What Arab Americans Need to Know. A conversation featuring Meghan Maury, Policy Director, National LGBTQ Task Force, Member, Census National Advisory Committee; Samer Khalaf, President of Arab American Anti-Discrimintation Committee; and Maya Berry, Executive Director of Arab American Institute. RSVP here.

Tuesday, July 7: 1:00 PM EST – Answering the Question on Race & Ethnicity. A conversation featuring Dr. Rita Stephan, MEPI Director. RSVP here.

Wednesday, July 8: 12:00 PM EST – Arab American Health and the Census. Featuring Claudia Ayash, Co-Director of Arab Health Initiative; Nadia Abuelezam, Epidemiologist and Professor at Connell School of Nursing; Siwaar Abouhala, Yalla, Count Me In! Field Organizer and Community Health Student at Tufts University. RSVP here.

Wednesday, July 8: 6:00 PM EST – The Impact of the 2020 Census on Arab American Communities. Featuring Ahmad Abuznaid, AAI; Hassan Sheikh, City of Dearborn, Isra Daraseih, ACCESS, Rana Elmir, ACLU MI; Wassim Mahfrouz, LAHC. RSVP here.

Friday, July 10th: 12:00PM EST- The Importance of Counting Refugees and Migrants on the 2020 Census. Featuring Basma Alawee, Florida Field Director for Yalla, Count Me In! and Executive Director of WeaveTales; Rana Abdul, Executive Director of Arab American Community Center of Florida. RSVP here.

  1. Volunteer to call your fellow Arab Americans and urge them to fill out the 2020 Census and write in their ethnic heritage on their forms. We are making calls all week to Arab Americans in Census tracts with low response rates. If you are an Arabic speaker, your skills are needed. You may sign up to volunteer here.

As we work to “get out the count” in the sprint to the finish, we need your help. I can think of no better way to secure the long-term health, preparedness, and well-being of our community than by ensuring a fair and accurate count of Arab Americans. Can we count you in? #YallaCountMeIn.

We’re looking forward to a week full of community action!

Maya
