Registration is now open for EGLE's Waste Webinar Series
The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), Materials Management Division (MMD) proudly presents the Waste Webinar Series. The series was first recorded in 2016, refreshed in 2020 and 2023, and is being refreshed again in 2026. The Waste Webinar Series provides valuable information to help Michigan facilities achieve and maintain compliance with the hazardous waste and liquid industrial by-products regulations. Sites handling these waste streams are encouraged to view all of the webinars that apply to site-specific waste activities and complete the self-certification form [ [link removed] ] that documents the training was completed.
The webinars are introductory in nature, free, and feature firsthand experiences from MMD inspectors. Anyone responsible for environmental, health, and safety compliance would benefit from participating in and/or viewing the webinars. Anyone who registers for the webinars will get a follow-up e-mail with additional topic specific resources and a link to the recording when it is available. Do not miss out, register today!
Upcoming webinars in the series
October 21, 2025, 10 – 11 AM
Waste 101 [ [link removed] ]
Learn the basics about the various types of waste, what regulations apply, to whom, and who implements the enforcement program. Attendees will come away with a big picture perspective of how the waste regulations work and what common wastes fall into the various regulations out there, including those that overlap. The webinar covers hazardous waste, liquid industrial by-products, solid waste, PCB (polychlorinated biphenyl) waste, medical waste, radiological waste, and recycling.
November 12, 2025, 1 – 2 PM
Common Hazardous Waste Violations [ [link removed] ]
Learn what inspectors look for during their site walk-through. See examples of the good, the bad, and the ugly that inspectors see in the field. Hear how EGLE responds to non-compliance matters needing correction.
November 25, 2025, 10 – 11 AM
Hazardous Waste and Liquid Industrial By-products Characterization and Generator Status [ [link removed] ]
Learn the steps for determining if a waste is a hazardous waste, liquid industrial by-product, or non-hazardous solid waste, and how to calculate a site’s hazardous waste generator status. These concepts are vital to understanding how to properly manage and dispose of waste. It’s vital because the hazardous waste regulations require each business at each site to evaluate the character and composition of their waste and determine the total weight of all hazardous waste generated each month, to determine the legal disposal options.
December 10, 2025, 1 – 2 PM
Hazardous Waste and Liquid Industrial By-products Accumulation and Labeling [ [link removed] ]
Learn about the accumulation and labeling requirements that apply to the management of hazardous waste and liquid industrial by-products at sites generating these waste streams.
January 13, 2026, 10 – 11 AM
Hazardous Waste and Liquid Industrial By-product Inspection and Recordkeeping [ [link removed] ]
Learn what to expect during an inspection and the specific records an inspector wants to see. Inspectors review waste characterizations, monthly waste inventories, uniform manifests, shipping documents, land disposal restriction records, biennial reports, and more. Attendees also get an overview of what an inspector does when they come to your facility.
February 3, 2026, 10 – 11 AM
Universal Waste [ [link removed] ]
Learn why the universal waste regulations exist, what a universal waste is, and how universal waste must be handled and disposed to meet the universal waste partial exemption from hazardous waste regulation.
February 24, 2026, 10 – 11 AM
Used Oil and Liquid Industrial By-product Handling Requirements [ [link removed] ]*
*
Learn about common liquid industrial by-products, including used oil, and how generators and receiving facilities must manage non-hazardous liquids, such as catch basin cleanout waste, antifreeze, brine, vegetable fats, leachate, and more.
March 10, 2026, 10 – 11 AM
Hazardous Secondary Materials Options and Examples [ [link removed] ]
Learn what a hazardous secondary material (HSM) is, how it must be handled, the legitimacy criteria that must be met, and how this exemption from hazardous waste regulations benefits the generator, recycler, and the environment.
March 31, 2026, 10 – 11 AM
Very Small Quantity Hazardous Waste Generator and Liquid Industrial By-products Generator Requirements [ [link removed] ]
Learn what a very small quantity generator (VSQG) is and what they must do to maintain their exemption from the hazardous waste regulations.
April 9, 2026, 10 – 11 AM
Hazardous Waste and Liquid Industrial By-products Transport Permitting, Registration, and Documentation Requirements [ [link removed] ]
Learn about the regulations that apply when transporting hazardous waste and liquid industrial by-products in Michigan. In this webinar attendees will learn who has to obtain a permit and registration from EGLE, and maintain spill insurance for transporting these wastes streams. This session will also cover how the shipments must be documented by all those handling the waste streams (the generator, transporter, and disposal facility) and the records an inspector will request when performing an inspection.

What Healthcare Facilities and E-cigarette Retailers Need to Know about Michigan's New Hazardous Waste Regulations [ [link removed] ]
Learn about the federal hazardous waste standards adopted into Michigan’s hazardous waste regulations that became effective May 5, 2025. On February 22, 2019, the United States Environmental Protection Agency promulgated federal hazardous waste pharmaceuticals rules regulating the management of pharmaceuticals and e-cigarettes. As required by federal mandate, Michigan adopted the federal regulations into Michigan’s Hazardous Waste Program. The new rules rescind Michigan’s designation of pharmaceuticals as a universal waste. Watch this webinar to learn who is subject to these new rules, how to notify of this waste activity, and how these waste streams must be managed and disposed.
