ADD YOUR NAME NOW: Support D.C. Statehood >>
John, the House made history by advancing a measure that would make Washington, D.C. the 51st state of the United States.
This historic moment is a long time coming.
Back in 2013, I introduced a measure that would grant D.C. statehood and give Washingtonians full voting representation in Congress. It's been a tough seven-year fight, and I'm so proud to see this important plan advance through the House.
For too long, Washingtonians have not enjoyed the same rights as Americans in the rest of the country. There are 700,000 Americans who call D.C. home, which is a larger population than some current states. They're students, workers, business owners, members of our military. They pay more in taxes per capita than anywhere else in the country.
But John, they don't have a full say in their government. It goes against the democratic principles our country was founded on 244 years ago, and it goes against the Golden Rule to treat others as you want to be treated.
Recently, we saw the difficult reality of this long-standing injustice unfold in disturbing fashion when President Trump used military force on Washingtonians practicing their constitutional right to peacefully protest. Trump was only able to do that precisely because D.C. is not a state.
But as our 51st state, D.C. would have control over its police force and would finally have full representation in Congress.
This measure is a great step forward, but our fight isn't over. We need to maintain the widespread support and momentum behind D.C. statehood and put pressure on Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to take action on it in the Senate.
Will you add your name and call to make D.C. the 51st state of the United States?
Thank you,
TC
