(LANSING, MICH) -- During National Life Insurance Awareness Month, the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) is reminding Michiganders that the Department is available to help answer questions and provide other assistance for those looking for more information about life insurance.

“Life insurance can provide peace of mind as well as financial security during major changes in a family’s life,” said *DIFS Director Anita Fox*. “Whether you're just starting a family, caring for aging parents, or planning for retirement, DIFS is here to help Michiganders navigate their options and protect the people who matter most to them. You can reach DIFS by calling 877-999-6442, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., or by visiting Michigan.gov/DIFS.”

DIFS offers free resources and consumer protection tools to support Michiganders, including:


* *Tips on Buying Life Insurance* [ [link removed] ]: There are simple steps consumers may take to shop safely and confidently:
* Research and educate yourself on life insurance and prepare any questions you may have for an insurance agent.


* Choose an insurance agent and company you feel confident in to meet your life insurance needs. The DIFS Locator [ [link removed] ] is available to verify the licensure of an insurance professional.


* Work with your insurance agent or company to determine the best type of life insurance policy and coverage amount for your needs and budget.


* Review your insurance application for accuracy, make an informed decision, and only purchase life insurance if you intend to commit to the duration of the policy.


* *The Life Insurance and Annuity Search Service (LIAS):* [ [link removed] ] LIAS helps families locate lost life insurance policies and annuity contracts. To date, DIFS’ LIAS program has been able to help recover more than $49 million for Michiganders. To learn more, visit michigan.gov/LIAS.
