Remember the SAVE Act?

I know how hard it is to keep track of everything these days, so here’s a refresher: It’s the extreme anti-democracy bill that passed the House earlier this year but got blocked by the Senate after a public outcry.

This bill would be a cudgel to voting rights, and would likely disenfranchise millions of people, including women, younger voters, naturalized citizens, and low-income voters.

Now, some extreme lawmakers are trying to sneak the bill through the Senate by attaching the SAVE Act to a budget resolution or the National Defense Authorization Act — essentially, slipping it through alongside essential legislation, hoping no one will notice.

These are the types of fights the NDRC was made for. Help us push back on all attempts to take power away from voters — whether it’s in Congress or the states. [[link removed]]

The SAVE Act would require all American citizens registering to vote or updating their registration to present proof of citizenship — either a passport or a birth certificate. Government-issued driver’s licenses wouldn’t work, putting the onus on each individual voter to prove that they’re American citizens.

And if your information doesn’t match what’s on your birth certificate — say you changed your last name after getting married, like 84 percent of married women, for example — then you might not be able to vote. Or say you lost your birth certificate in a move or a house fire? Too bad.

Bottom line: The SAVE Act would turn voting rights upside-down and disenfranchise millions of Americans. And that’s the whole idea — Republicans these days are terrified of the will of the people. That’s why we exist: to fight for people’s rights to be heard. Right now, we’ve got to pull out all the stops to prevent this bill from ever passing the Senate.
