BREAKING NEWS: ABC just announced that Jimmy Kimmel will be back on the air tomorrow. This is thanks to millions of Americans coming together to protect the right to free speech – including nearly a hundred thousand PCCC members who took action this weekend.
This is Congressman Ro Khanna and here’s why, even as we cheer the news, this isn’t over.
FIRST: Paramount CANCELLED The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, facing pressure from the FCC to take Colbert off the air while seeking approval for an $8 billion merger with Skydance Media. Trump applauded Colbert’s firing.
THEN: ABC, under pressure from the FCC, SUSPENDED Jimmy Kimmel to ensure a $6.2 billion merger between broadcast distributors Nexstar and Tegna. Once again, Trump celebrated the decision.
NEXT: The House Oversight Committee REJECTED my motion to subpoena FCC Chairman Brendan Carr for bullying private companies and censoring our media.
While we cheer the victory of getting Jimmy Kimmel back on the air, we cannot allow Trump and his allies to abuse their power to attack our rights to free speech and freedom of the press.
This victory does not change the fact that Carr, who authored a chapter on the FCC in Project 2025, is abusing his power to silence critics of Trump and his allies—a blatant violation of freedom of the press under the First Amendment.
He’s just the latest to threaten our constitutionally protected speech, with “free speech champion” JD Vance, Stephen Miller, and Pam Bondi all stating that they will come after left-wing nonprofits and networks. Trump himself has sued both CBS’s 60 Minutes and The New York Times for what he deems negative coverage against him.
We’re witnessing the biggest, most blatant assault on the First Amendment in modern U.S. history playing out in real time.
Even when a big corporation like ABC reverses course due to public pressure, we must ensure there is accountability for those who attack our rights to free speech and freedom of the press.
