Border Angels Update

This stretch of sand and dilapidated road is approximately 35 air miles from the U.S.-Mexico border. In walking miles, this location is approximately 50 walking miles from the U.S.-Mexico border. The tires are dragged by Border Patrol over the sand as a way to easily see new footprints. The Border Patrol checkpoint is just south of this location.

50 miles of walking while trying to stay hidden in temperatures that range from the low 100s to mid 120s in the summer. 50 miles of ducking and dodging brush, through desert sand. 50 miles of crawling and hiding in fields and farmlands.

This past weekend was eye opening, sad and motivating all at the same time. Our work expands as we learn more, and the more we learn the more we understand even more how inhumane the system is and how inhospitable the journey can be for many. There is no shortage of cruelty the government will impose.

Saturday, June 20th, was HOT. We're so proud and thankful for everyone that came out and helped us get supplies to the much needed areas on the longest day of the year. Your efforts are truly helping to minimize suffering in the desert.

The summer solstice is when the sun reaches its highest position in the sky and is the day with the longest period of daylight, around 14.5 hours this past Saturday.

We experienced some issues, like melted boots and mild heat. Temperatures were around 110°. We're really proud of how everyone on our team stepped up to help each other and ensure everyone made it out safely. Sometimes that takes resting in the slightest sliver of shade or using some of the water we intend to leave. When we get back safe, that allows us to regroup, recharge and strategize our efforts for the next time. Thank you!

Our risk is minimal compared to those risking it all. We have slept in a bed the night before, ate breakfast the morning of, have had the chance to hydrate and rest during the week. Our 5-7 hours hiking in that heat with supplies can make a big difference to someone who is on their journey.

The weather will not deter us, we just have to adapt.

The Heat: U.S. immigration and DACA ruling

U.S. President Trump temporarily suspends new work visas, barring foreigners from seeking employment in the United States. For a deeper discussion on this topic, tonight’s panel includes Dulce Garcia, an attorney and DACA recipient; Ray Ybarra Maldonado, an attorney, human rights activist and author; Adolfo Franco, attorney and Republican strategist and Dan Raviv is a columnist for Newsday and author.

At minute 13:50, DACA is the topic of discussion.
Dulce Garcia and the other panelists debate on whether DACA should continue on. Even with this victory, the fight continues! There are still constant threats and opposition from the President and the administration.

‘They’re Treating Us Like Animals’: Detainees Say Disinfectant Used by ICE Is Making Them Sick

By Giselle Balido

Executive Director Dulce Garcia’s The Americano interview on the heinous act of disinfectant being sprayed at detainees inside the Adelanto ICE Processing Center

"However, Dulce Garcia, Executive Director of Border Angels, a San Diego based organization focused on migrant rights, immigration reform, and the prevention of immigrant deaths along the border, told The Americano that the Adelanto facility has a history of housing immigrants and migrants in “atrocious” conditions.

“I have a brother that was in immigration detention for months. That experience changed him and is forever in my mind,” says García.

Every week, she says, she receives calls from people in detention expressing their fear of dying inside. “It is essentially a death sentence from which people desperately seek to get out.” "

Green Cards for Kids

With our new Green Cards for Kids program, we are so lucky to be able to work with immigration attorney Fabiola Navarro who will be representing these children.

It is crucial that we help these children as they have already suffered enough abuse, neglect and/or abandonment.

With your continued support, we can help pay for the legal representation these children deserve in this critical time of their lives.

Judge overturns Trump border rule requiring immigrants to first claim asylum in another country

Under the rule, the U.S. could refuse to consider a request for asylum from anyone who failed to apply for it after leaving home but before reaching the U.S.

By Dennis Romero & Julia Ainsley

"A federal judge ruled on Tuesday night that the Trump administration’s strictest asylum policy to date is illegal.

A rule put in place in 2019 prohibited immigrants from claiming asylum in the United States if they did not first try to claim it in a country they passed through on their way to the U.S. border.

U.S. District Judge Timothy J. Kelly of Washington, D.C., ruled in favor of immigrant nonprofits and asylum-seekers who argued that the rule known as the "third-country asylum rule," which was jointly published by the Justice Department and the Department of Homeland Security, violated the Immigration and Nationality Act."

"HOUSTON — The U.S. government said Wednesday that it should not have to automatically release immigrant parents detained with their children — including some infants — after a federal judge set a deadline for the children to be freed, which advocates warned could lead to the renewed separation of families.

In court papers, the Trump administration argued Judge Dolly Gee’s findings on Friday were “insufficient” to prove the allegations made by families that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement isn’t doing enough to control the spread of coronavirus, even as there have been confirmed cases of COVID-19 in two of three family detention centers in Texas and Pennsylvania."

Supreme Court OKs government’s quick removal of immigrants who cross border illegally

By David G. Savage

"WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Thursday upheld the government’s power to arrest, question and quickly remove immigrants who are caught crossing the border illegally.

In a victory for the Trump administration, the justices rejected the claim that immigrants who seek asylum have a right to a full federal court review through a writ of habeas corpus, even if their claims are judged to be not credible.

The 7-2 decision came in the case of a Sri Lankan immigrant who was caught late at night 25 yards north of the border with Mexico near San Ysidro, Calif. He was interviewed by an asylum officer who concluded he did not have a “credible fear of persecution,” which would trigger a further hearing. A supervisor and immigration judge agreed his claim did not deserve further review."

As #DefundThePolice Movement Gains Steam, Immigration Enforcement Spending and Practices Attract Scrutiny

By Muzaffar Chishti and Jessica Bolter

"While CBP and ICE represent just two of the 22 agencies within DHS, they received 29 percent of the fiscal year (FY) 2020 DHS budget outlay. Moreover, in FY 2020, CBP, ICE, and the Office of Biometric Identity Management (OBIM), which operates the biometrics systems critical to conducting and targeting their operations, received $26 billion—$6.5 billion more than all five other federal principal criminal law enforcement agencies combined. In fact, throughout the existence of DHS, federal immigration enforcement agencies have consistently been funded at higher levels than these other federal law enforcement agencies"
