President Donald Trump is trampling on the balance of powers at the heart
of our democracy.

The Constitution gives Congress the power to conduct oversight of the
executive branch. But in the nearly four years of his presidency, Donald
Trump and his cronies have refused to comply with Congressional subpoenas,
blocked investigations, and defied the rule of law.

In the last few weeks alone, the Trump administration has fired the U.S.
Attorney in New York for apparently investigating people close to the
president and carried out a coverup of intelligence suggesting Russia paid
bounties for the killing of American soldiers.

It’s clear Congress needs to add muscle to its power to oversee the
executive branch and get the answers that are owed to the American people.
Congressman Ted Lieu has a new bill to do just that.

It’s called the Congressional Inherent Contempt Power Act, and if passed,
it would give the House of Representatives additional tools, including
substantial, increasing fines, to compel executive branch officials to
comply with authorized subpoenas.
