Chairman's Update

This is a new weekly update from Pennsylvania Republican Party Chairman Lawrence Tabas filling you in on what our statewide party leaders are up to, along with relevant news pertaining to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
Good afternoon, Pennsylvania.
It has been a busy week here in our great Commonwealth. The Trump campaign is suing Pennsylvania statewide election officials for the unconstitutional ballot boxes that were used during the PA Primary. The Pennsylvania Supreme Court nullified the Pennsylvania Legislature’s House Resolution 836, and by doing so sided with Governor Wolf and his abuse of power.
There is a bright side, however.
The Republican leadership in the PA Legislature is continuing to do great things and produce real, commonsense solutions. Their bipartisan efforts should serve as a model for Congress.
Lastly, I want to wish you a blessed and safe 4th of July weekend. We are truly blessed to live in this great nation. Happy 4th!

** I had a (virtual) sitdown with Sean Spicer

The Trump campaign has called to ban all mail-in ballot boxes that aren’t located at official county board of election sites for the general election. It shouldn’t be so complicated to make sure ballots are counted at official county board of election (BOE) sites, and not just a strategically placed box by the partisan proxies of the BOE.
I spoke to former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer on this issue. Here’s the thing : These ballot drop boxes are unconstitutional, end of story.

It is not a lot to ask for the vote of every Pennsylvanian to be fairly counted. These ballot boxes have:
* No staff to make sure ballots aren’t tampered with.
* No cameras to monitor safety of each ballot.
* County BOE players that pick and choose ballot box locations.
These ballot boxes put the voice and vote of every Pennsylvanian at risk for the 2020 election.

** Toomey takes on Chinese Communist Party… Again
------------------------------------------------------------
[link removed]. Senator Pat Toomey’s bipartisan Hong Kong Autonomy Act passed unanimously in the Senate last week. This is a great step toward holding China accountable, and we are grateful for Sen. Toomey’s work with Sen. Van Hollen to ensure the inclusion of this act as an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).
The United States must stand for Hong Kong as it fights for freedom. Sen. Toomey and Sen. Van Hollen’s bill would impose sanctions on the Chinese Communist Party and support Hongkongers seeking to enter the United States.
This is a huge victory against China. "Last week, the Senate stood up to the communist regime in Beijing and stood with the people of Hong Kong," said Senator Toomey.

** Speaker Cutler on Face the State 👀
------------------------------------------------------------
[link removed] Cutler sat down with Ryan Eldredge on Rob Hanrahan’s “Face the State” to discuss his new role as House Speaker.
Speaker Cutler discussed that while the coronavirus pandemic has temporarily halted meetings with legislative members across the state, he looks forward to continuing this tradition when the time is right. Speaker Cutler regularly visited members of the state legislature as majority leader and House whip, and looks forward to doing the same in his new role.
Speaker Cutler also touched on the Pennsylvania Legislature’s current bipartisan efforts to have actual, effective conversations on police reform.
“The biggest part is we were able to sit down and talk through the bills and their different components,” Speaker Cutler said when asked how members are able to work together to find a solution.
It seems Congress could learn a thing or two from our statewide legislators here in Pennsylvania.

** PA Supreme Court sides with Gov. Wolf, Senate leaders show disapproval
------------------------------------------------------------
[link removed] President Scarnati issued a joint statement along with Senate Majority Leader Corman on Wednesday strongly criticizing the Pennsylvania Supreme Court for nullifying PA Legislature’s call to end Gov. Wolf’s executive order.
Gov. Wolf refused to end this order, demonstrating a complete abuse of power. This explains why House Resolution 838 passed in the PA General Assembly with bipartisan support.
Sen. Scarnati said the following on the matter:
“Today’s ruling by the Supreme Court fails to uphold the Constitutional balance of power between the three, co-equal branches of government.
“We understand the need for a temporary suspension of civil liberties under dire circumstances – something we agreed needed to happen initially as we worked to flatten the curve. However, while we work to protect lives, we cannot continue to disregard the civil liberties of Pennsylvanians. Our government was established to be of the people, by the people and for the people. With this ruling the Court has elected not to uphold the foundation of our democracy.”
