Celebrating Deaf Awareness Week in Texas
Each September, communities around the world come together to celebrate Deaf Awareness Week. It is a time to recognize the rich culture, language, and contributions of Deaf and hard of hearing people, while also promoting inclusion and accessibility for all.
In Texas, we are proud to have a strong network of resources supporting individuals and families. The Texas School for the Deaf [ [link removed] ] and its Statewide Outreach Center [ [link removed] ] provide educational programs, family support, and statewide services.
Deaf Awareness Week is also a reminder of the small things we can all do to make communication easier: speak clearly, face the person you are talking to, and support accessibility measures like captions or interpreters. These actions open doors to inclusion and help create a Texas where everyone belongs.
In Governor Abbott’s proclamation, he shared “I encourage all Texans to support and celebrate those who are deaf or hard of hearing. I commend the professionals, educators, and employers who continue to advance their interests. Together, we can build the Texas of Tomorrow..” As we celebrate this week, let’s honor the voices, stories, and leadership of Texans who are Deaf and hard of hearing, and continue working toward a more inclusive future.
