Justice Democrats

John,

With less than five weeks until Justice Democrat Rashida Tlaib’s primary, the establishment is attacking her for standing with the people.

This week, the Detroit Police leadership ran to Fox News to complain about Rashida’s support for Black Lives Matter protesters in the face of police violence, in Detroit and across the country. Their latest attack comes on the heels of Detroit police driving violently through a crowd of protesters. After video footage clearly showed this life-endangering behavior, Rashida called for accountability. It’s clear that the Detroit police would rather try to discredit Rashida instead of embracing these calls for accountability.

While Rashida Tlaib has supported uprisings against police violence and systemic anti-Black racism, her opponent has consistently sided with police and against Black Lives Matter protesters.

In response to a call to drop charges against Black Lives Matter protesters, Rashida’s opponent, a local public official, said, “It would be improper for me to interfere with proceedings in the legal world,” even though holding law enforcement accountable and pushing for change are well within the role of public officials. She even went so far as to call protesters “entitled,” saying, “I will not support this mindset of entitlement or special privilege given to one group over another group.”

That’s not leadership. That’s propping up an unjust status quo, a status quo that folks have been in the streets calling to be dismantled and transformed. We need leaders with political imagination, who work with social movements to dream bigger and fight for a better world.

Together, let’s defend Rashida against attacks by proponents of the status quo who are threatened by a member of Congress who speaks truth to power. Donate $3 or more today!
