There's no easy way to say this, but our asylum system is on the verge of collapse.

Last month, the Trump administration proposed a list of changes to the U.S. asylum system that would essentially bar all those seeking refuge in the United States if the rule goes into effect.

The changes proposed include making it harder to prove credible fear of persecution, blocking Central American refugees because they traveled through another country on the way to the border, banning women and others fleeing domestic and gang violence from qualifying for the status, and completely destroying due process for those who apply.

This is not the first time Trump has tried to change the asylum system, but this proposal would be one of the most devastating changes enacted in the past 3+ years.

If these changes are enacted, the U.S. asylum system will essentially cease to exist. This means there will be no way to process and protect those seeking refuge at a time when it is already difficult to do so.
