We’ve got 78 days till election day and it’s the new financial year for the Party and you should have already received an email from Rose, our National Secretary, to make sure you renew your membership <[link removed]>. It’s $5 for your annual membership <[link removed]> and you could also add more pūtea <[link removed]> if you can to help chip into our fighting fund for the campaign.

We are also going to focus in on each of our Māori Seat candidates over the next seven weeks starting from the top of the motu and working our way around the country. See more about Mariameno Kapa-Kingi <[link removed]> below.

Takutai vs. Foreshore hmmmm… Sounds like a Tui Ad

And now the latest, it is ironic that Labour is trying to compare the Takutai Moana Act to the Foreshore and Seabed. Yes, the Act is not perfect, we all knew that and repealing the Foreshore and Seabed Act would have been a cleaner process. But we only have the Takutai Moana Act because of the Foreshore and Seabed Act.

If we had their numbers, we would be making sure that the takutai moana throughout the country is returned to all coastal iwi and their respective hapū. Now that’s a nice simple option that we would push if we were in similar power position.

Meanwhile, we have a heap of work to focus in on so let’s keep focused on our campaign and mahia te mahi.

Te reo Māori

Over the weekend, I was at my cousin Toni Waho’s tangi and was immersed in a sea of te reo Māori and tikanga Māori. What was evident was that there were so many sacrifices to get to where we’ve got to in our te reo Māori revitalisation and we must continue to do more.

Having both Te Karere and Te Ao cover the tangi is a reminder of the Tiriti rights that our te reo Māori advocates fought for and secured. And with this current review of Māori Media taking place, it’s obvious that this government wants to put te ao Māori in one corner.

We must be focused on celebrating our culture everywhere and promoting efficiencies shouldn’t be used to get rid of our treaty rights that were hard fought for by champions like Dr Huirangi Waikerepuru. With only 80 days till election day on Saturday 19 September, we must fight for the protection of te reo Māori again and the micro aggressive moves by this government are trying to erode our rights.

Mariameno Kapa-Kingi <[link removed]>
