Last week, I joined the Sunrise Movement in NY-16 to call on the Democratic Party to host a Climate Debate for presidential candidates. The Sunrise Movement — led by young people across America — is doing the work of democracy, standing up to power and demanding our leaders act on climate change.

The Amazon is burning and our glaciers are melting. We are living in a climate emergency and we do not have time to wait. The climate crisis is already affecting us in more ways than one: our health, our homes, our livelihoods, and so much more. Climate change is integrated deeply in our lives and we must do everything in our power to address it. Over and over again, the DNC has refused to host a climate debate. It’s unacceptable.

We need leadership in the Democratic party that makes the climate crisis one of the forefront priorities of our nation. As Congressman for NY-16, I will work every day to create policy to address climate change and ensure our nation is at the forefront of the crisis. The Democratic Party should follow the leadership of the Sunrise Movement and the young people who have the foresight, clarity, and morality to put us in the right direction. The time to act is now.
