FIRST: Donald Trump picked up the phone and demanded that Texas Governor Greg Abbott find him five congressional seats.
THEN: Texas Republicans drew up an egregiously gerrymandered map behind closed doors. Texas Democrats left the state to stop it, and Republicans called for their arrest. Republicans forced through their map despite massive outcry.
NOW: The fair maps movement is taking Texas to court over its racial gerrymander that dilutes the voting power of communities of color. But Republicans aren’t done trying to cheat their way through the midterms. Trump and his allies are demanding more seats in more states — from Missouri to Indiana to Ohio and Florida.
This fight is happening on all fronts and it takes enormous resources for us to hold the line. The last few months have been nonstop attacks on democracy, and there are new threats of extreme gerrymandering still on the horizon. We’re at a critical inflection point in the fight for fair maps, and we can’t afford to let up.
