John,
Congressman John Lewis was only 19 years old when he led the Selma-to-Montgomery Marches for voting rights and suffered a skull fracture on the first attempt known as “Bloody Sunday."
The NBC televised broadcast of “Bloody Sunday” on the Edmund Pettus Bridge shocked the nation and forced us out of denial. Violent images that could not be unseen created a tipping point in the civil rights movement, leading to the signing of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 less than five months later.
Join Rock the Vote tomorrow, July 3, for the virtual premiere of John Lewis: Good Trouble as we honor the foundation built by civil rights leaders that inspires us to protest and vote for change today. [[link removed]]
Our country is at another tipping point. Again, young people are leading and, again, undeniable images are leading to a new awakening – only this time, footage is being caught on cell phones and distributed on social media. These images have given rise to a new chapter in the continued story of the civil rights movement, a movement that is not over in its demand that this country recognize that Black Lives Matter, fully realize the citizenship of Black Americans, and break down the systemic racism that keeps a knee on the necks of Black Americans.
Young people today are building on John Lewis’ legacy by marching and getting into "good trouble." We believe that we need to know where we came from to know where we are going.
