Rent is due again.

Although more Americans than ever are unable to pay rent— thanks to widespread job losses due to the COVID-19 pandemic— House leader Nancy Pelosi still hasn’t supported Representative Ilhan Omar’s critical Rent and Mortgage Cancellation Act.

Rep. Omar’s Act, first introduced back in April, would:

Cancel rents and home mortgage payments nationwide until the pandemic is over
Forgive all payments, with no debt—and no stain on credit records or ratings
Create a fund to help landlords who might suffer when their renters can’t pay
Fund public purchase of private properties, to help ease the housing crisis

This isn’t rocket science. When Americans lose their income due to circumstances beyond their control, the government is supposed to step in and help out, keeping the economy going so people don’t starve, go unhoused, or take unsafe work.

So why isn’t Nancy Pelosi backing this bill? Even conservative governments around the world are doing more for their citizens.

Could Pelosi’s priorities reflect her campaign contributions from the real estate industry?

Or might they represent the industry even more directly? She herself is a real estate mogul worth over $100 million. Does Pelosi have any empathy for renters and small homeowners?
