Friends, if you’re worried that abortion bans will turn into contraception bans, now is the time to sound the alarm — loudly.

Last week, the New York Times reported that the Trump Administration ordered $10 million in contraceptives to be destroyed. USAID purchased these birth control pills, IUDs, and hormonal implants to support women’s health and economic opportunity in low-income countries. 

This should not be controversial. But since Elon Musk and DOGE gutted USAID earlier this year, billions of dollars in foreign aid has been cut off — even when that aid, like contraceptives or even food, have already been purchased. 

Over the summer, the Trump Administration incinerated enough emergency food to feed 27,000 starving children for a month — 500 tons of aid. In that case, they said the food had expired. (The U.N. had offered to distribute it before then — the administration declined.)

Here’s what they claimed about the contraceptives:

So, first of all, none of the destroyed contraceptives were abortifacients — meaning a drug that induces an abortion — in part because USAID is already prohibited by law from procuring abortifacients! 

But second of all, let’s be clear about what the Trump Administration is saying here. They’re saying that they consider birth control pills and IUDs to be abortions.

This is a really big deal. It makes clear that the anti-choice movement sees birth control as their next big battle after overturning Roe v. Wade. We *must* take action at the federal level to protect the right to contraception.

I’m a proud co-lead of the Right to Contraception Act, and am grateful to have the support of more than 200 of my Democratic colleagues on that bill. Birth control isn’t a substitute for abortion rights — but it’s an absolutely vital part of our freedom and wellbeing. 

We know we can’t pass this legislation in the triple minority — so step one of winning this fight has to be winning back control of the House. 

I’m 100% committed to the fight for a Democratic majority. My team and I are mapping out all our plans for the next year — supporting vulnerable Democratic incumbents, backing strong Democratic challengers, and winning my own re-election here in CA-51.
