Speaking truth to power has never been more dangerous – or more necessary.

Donald Trump and his inner circle are showing us exactly who they are.

In the wake of Charlie Kirk’s tragic killing, instead of calling for unity
or lowering the temperature, Trump and his top officials are exploiting
grief and anger to wage a campaign of vengeance against their perceived
political enemies.^[1,2,3]

Vice President J.D. Vance has pledged to “go after the NGO network” he
claims is inciting violence. Stephen Miller vowed to unleash the Justice
Department and Homeland Security to disrupt “radical left” organizations.
And Trump himself floated labeling Antifa – and by extension, left-wing
protestors and advocacy groups – as a domestic terrorist organization.

They offered no evidence to support their wild and dangerous accusations.
None.

This is the same playbook we’ve seen before: invent a crisis, demonize
dissent, and consolidate power. It’s McCarthyism with modern machinery,
and it risks sweeping up organizations like ours – groups that speak truth
to power, mobilize voters, and hold those in power accountable.

We know what comes next if we don’t resist: investigations, intimidation,
the chilling of free speech. Trump has already threatened he’ll use
racketeering laws to pursue his threats. Vance named nonprofit foundations
as targets. This is not hypothetical.

That’s why we must act now. Our movement cannot afford to be silenced. We
need the resources to fight back – in court, in Congress, and in the
public square – against this authoritarian campaign of retribution.

The truth is simple: dissent is not terrorism. Protest is not a crime.
Advocacy is not violence. If Trump and his allies succeed in blurring
those lines, every progressive organization in this country is at risk.
