CHBA CI celebrating 55 years
CHBA CI
The Canadian Home Builders’ Association of Central Interior (CHBA CI) is proud to celebrate its 55th year in Kamloops by naming Bill Bilton, the remaining original member from 1965, as an honourary lifetime member.

The Kamloops Home Builders Association (now CHBA CI) was founded in 1965 with 12 members, and created to encourage builder networking and support. Bill is the third in the association’s history to receive this prestigious status, recognizing his 55-year contributions to our association and community. While networking is still one of the CHBA's core values, our commitment to the health of our industry has expanded to include advocacy, education, and the Keystone Awards.

Affordable, replicable and marketable net zero ready multiple unit residential buildings
Government of Canada
The objective of this Project is to validate that the use of panelized/modular construction and integrated mechanical system technologies, design and practices on Net Zero Energy Ready and Net Zero Energy Multi-Unit Residential Buildings (‘MURBs’) to optimize energy efficient performance, reduce costs, increase construction productivity and reduce construction schedules.

The project will build 7 demonstration buildings (over 100 residential units) across 4 provinces, covering all major Canadian climate zones; confirm the actual buildings performance through one full year of post project monitoring and build capacity through training of builders and energy advisors across the country.

The project supports program objectives by helping to drive down the cost and creating market confidence in Net-Zero Energy Ready construction.

Find more information on this project here.

Commentary: Congratulations to the BC members participating in this pilot project: BC Hydro, BC Housing, Naikoon Contracting and Zirnhelt Timber Frames.

New incentive for Vancouver zero emission single-family homes and duplexes
City of Vancouver
On March 31st, Vancouver City Council enacted new regulations to help more detached houses reduce their energy use and emissions.

Single-family and duplex projects that are committed to zero emissions standards, including Passive House, can now access the following:

• a simple 16% floor space ratio exclusion for single family houses, and 18% for duplex that provides extra space for better projects, all wrapped up in an easier process
• a conditional height increase up to 1.0 m
• a conditional front yard variance of 0.5 m to complement existing regulations on the rear yard and building depth
• flexibility in external design regulations and partial storeys
• improvements to manage solar heat gain, including better solar access to the basement

The new regulations can be found in Section 10.23A of the Zoning and Development By-law, and Appendix A of this Council report. The Guidelines that inform application requirements can be found here.

Questions can be directed to Andrea Wickham ([email protected]) and Sailen Black at ([email protected]) at the City of Vancouver.
