Dear John,
I hate to sound like an alarmist, but I am increasingly concerned that next year’s all-important midterm elections will not be free and fair.
We’ve already seen Trump and his allies snatch 5 to 6 congressional seats through gerrymandering in Texas and Missouri. But that’s just the beginning. Trump has said he intends to ban mail-in voting, require voters nationwide to show ID when they vote, and disqualify votes cast using certain voting machines.
None of that would be legal, but has that ever stopped him?
Perhaps most concerning is the possibility that he may try to station masked ICE agents and National Guard troops in front of polling places to frighten immigrants and people of color away from voting.
We need to defend our democracy by alerting the public to these threats and urging Congress as well as state and local officials to defend our right to vote. Will you start a monthly donation to help support our campaign to defend the midterm elections and save our free and fair elections?
Let’s be clear about what’s going on here. Trump simply does not want free and fair elections in 2026 or beyond.
That’s why the rest of us — Democrats, independents, and Republicans who still believe in democracy — must do everything in our power to defend our free and fair elections starting right now.
Part of that effort is for states like California to match what Texas and other red states are doing by redistricting their own states. And Trump’s unlawful executive orders on mail-in ballots and voting machines must be challenged in court.
And we must work to defeat the SAVE Act, a House-passed bill that would require voters to show a passport or birth certificate matching the exact name on their current ID when they register. This bill would disenfranchise millions of married women, immigrants, and others who have changed their names. We must stop it in the Senate.
None of this will be easy, and Inequality Media Civic Action has a key role to play by educating the public and using our huge following across social media to mobilize grassroots support.
Trump knows he’s losing. That’s why he’s trying to rig the game.
His net approval ratings have fallen by 20 points. His signature legislative achievement, the “One Big Beautiful Bill,” is wildly unpopular. And a growing list of scandals are engulfing his entire administration.
But we won’t let him get away with it. That’s why I’m asking you today: Will you start a monthly donation to help educate the public and defend our free and fair elections?
Thank you,
Robert Reich
