If you only have 30 seconds, read this:
September 21st, Zero Emissions Day, is about giving our planet “a day off”
by cutting back on the energy we use. Usually, that means things like
turning off lights or driving less. But this year, Dream.Org wants to
shine the spotlight on a much bigger greenhouse gas offender: massive data
centers that power AI.
These facilities are sprouting up across the U.S., guzzling fossil-fueled
energy at a staggering scale.
Let’s demand that data centers run on clean, green energy.

If you’ve got more time, here’s the bigger picture:
Let’s put energy use in perspective.
* The average American home uses 899 kilowatt hours of electricity a
month. That’s like running about 3,700 lightbulbs nonstop for a whole
day.
* Now compare that to data centers — the giant warehouses full of
computers powering AI. A single data center can use 20 megawatt hours
a month or more — that’s 20 times more than a typical home or 74,000
lightbulbs shining bright, nonstop, all day long.
* By 2030, data centers could be consuming enough energy to power 56
million homes. And if most of that electricity still comes from coal,
oil, or gas — the pollution is off the charts!
Sure, on Zero Emissions Day, you can turn off your TV, adjust your
thermostat, or even go off-grid for a bit. Those steps help, but they pale
in comparison to the impact of data centers running on dirty power.
If we really want cleaner air, healthier communities, and a livable
future, we need the biggest polluters — tech giants building these
facilities — to switch to clean, renewable energy.
