ACLU Supporter, the military must never be used as a tool of oppression or a means of suppressing people who disagree with the government. This is foundational to our democracy and that is why our work at the ACLU is so pivotal.

Let's be clear: Flooding our streets with troops and federal agents is about sowing fear and chaos:

• First, in June, President Trump responded to protests against violent ICE raids by deploying National Guard troops, federal agents, and active-duty Marines to Los Angeles.
• Then, last month, he manufactured an emergency to seize control of Washington, D.C.'s police department and deployed thousands of National Guard troops from across the country to patrol the city.
• Now, he's threatening further unnecessary and dangerous federal deployments in major U.S. cities, including Memphis, New Orleans, San Francisco, and Chicago.

President Trump's goals are not subtle: These deployments are meant to suppress protest, stoke fear, target immigrant community members, and normalize military presence in our communities so he can force his extreme agenda and silence those he disagrees with.

With over 105 years of experience defending civil liberties and our Constitution, the ACLU is better equipped than anyone to lead the charge against the Trump administration's abuse of power.
