July 2, 1964, was a defining moment for our Nation. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 became law, and prohibited discrimination based on race, color, sex, or religion.
Now we're living through a time that echoes the fights of that era. Americans are still marching in the streets of our Nation, demanding justice and change, as they shout the names of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Rayshard Brooks, and so many other Black people killed by police. How we respond to this moment will define us for generations.
That's why Bob has joined with Senators Kamala Harris, Cory Booker, and other Democrats in the Senate to co-sponsor the Justice in Policing Act, which would improve police training, establish a national police misconduct registry, demilitarize local police, ban no-knock warrants for drug offenses, and make it easier to hold police accountable in our courts.

The actions our predecessors took 56 years ago have had a profound impact on our Nation, but our work for justice isn't over -- not when discriminatory police misconduct and mass incarceration tear families of color apart and disproportionately kill Black Americans during encounters with police.
Racism isn't the domain of a few "bad apples." Racism in our society is systemic and pervasive in our criminal justice system, including our police departments. We need real reform to change that, and we need it right now.
The Justice in Policing Act will make it easier to remove reckless officers from the streets; ban racial profiling, chokeholds, and carotid holds; ensure that misconduct is tracked; and help protect the civil rights of every American. Now we need to build the momentum to help make it law.
