John,

On Monday, Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier said open carry of firearms is now "the law of the state." His remark came after a state appeals court struck down a long-standing law that had prevented open carry, declaring it “unconstitutional.”

This is a terrifying development, especially in light of recent political violence and gun violence — and we need your help pushing back.

Time and time again, we’ve seen that the mere presence of firearms heightens tensions and exacerbates confrontations, potentially leading to violent consequences. When a firearm is present, a situation that could have been diffused may instead end in injury or death. Whether during a traffic altercation, an argument at a gas station, or just a dispute between friends — guns can turn a contentious situation into a deadly one.

There is also no widely endorsed research that open carry — especially concealed carry — has any public safety benefits. Firearms are rarely used successfully in self-defense. In fact, individuals successfully defend themselves with a gun in less than one percent of crimes. If guns truly made us safer, friend, America would be the safest country in the world.

This move by Florida is yet another step towards the Trump administration's dystopian “guns everywhere” agenda. It prioritizes profits at the expense of human life and the safety of our communities.
We cannot let Florida quietly undo this life-saving law or quietly watch as other states follow suit We must get loud to send a clear message that the American people don’t want loaded firearms everywhere! Take action today to condemn the open carry of firearms and stop this dangerous vision from becoming a reality! [[link removed]]

Protect Gun Violence Prevention Research

[link removed] [[link removed]]

We need your help right now: President Trump and his NRA-backed allies in Congress are trying to ban gun violence research. And we cannot let this happen.

Research on gun violence has helped us understand the scope and root causes of this crisis and has informed strategies to combat it. Prevention is the single best cure for this public health epidemic that is the leading cause of death for American youth.

Since 2020, Congress has allocated at least $25 million of federal funding annually for researching firearm-related public health harms through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institute of Health (NIH). We at Brady fought tirelessly [[link removed]] for this funding, which came after more than a 20-year hiatus.
But now, Trump and gun-lobby backed lawmakers want to decimate funding for research and outright ban federal funds from being used for any research related to gunshot injuries or mortality that treats the problem as a public health issue.

We can’t go backwards; we must stop this bill before it takes away decades of research that could save lives. Take action right now to demand Congress protect and fully fund gun violence research to make our communities safer. [[link removed]]

What Does it Mean to Be a Responsible Gun Dealer?

[link removed] [[link removed]]

Gun violence is driven, in part, by unsafe, irresponsible, or illegal gun dealer practices that divert firearms to the criminal market. The overwhelming majority of gun dealers do sell guns responsibly, but others require education and, sometimes, pressure.

That’s why Brady developed the Gun Dealer Code of Conduct, a tool intended to help firearms dealers identify business practices to minimize the likelihood that firearms will be used in crime.
The Trump administration has gutted meaningful oversight of gun dealers and even created a process to encourage gun dealers who had their licenses revoked for breaking the law to reapply and go back into business.

More than ever, we need gun dealers to ensure they are selling firearms responsibly. And as community members, you can help. Learn more today to see how you can take action in your community to incentivize safe gun industry business practices! [[link removed]]

Firearm Suicide Prevention Month

[link removed] [[link removed]]

(l-r) Senior Director of Brady’s End Family Fire program Colleen Creighton, Alexandria Circuit Court Clerk Greg Park, Brady President Kris Brown, and Vice Mayor Sarah Bagley

As part of Suicide Awareness Month, Brady’s End Family Fire [[link removed]] program has partnered with the City of Alexandria, VA, to promote secure storage and give away free gun locks!

Gun locks are just one way that people can safely store their firearms to prevent instances of family fire, or a shooting that results from someone misusing an unsecured firearm from the home. By ensuring that gun locks are accessible and affordable to the people of Alexandria, the City is helping stop these devastating tragedies before they occur.

Through this new partnership, every gun lock distributed by the Clerk’s Office will include an End Family Fire sticker that directs gun owners to endfamilyfire.org [[link removed]] where they can find additional secure storage information. With 80 to 100 gun locks given away each month in Alexandria, this will be a great tool to educate families about family fire and how they can prevent it.
