The Board and partners celebrating our new agreement with the City of LA to open more Community School Parks.

Dear friends and partners,

School is fully back in action at LA Unified. I’ve been thrilled to visit campuses, meet parents, and observe joy and learning in classrooms, even as we know that anxiety and fear continue to challenge many families outside of school walls.

The Board’s work also continues. Earlier this week, we celebrated Latino Heritage Month and reiterated our commitment to celebrating and protecting the diversity that is this District’s strength. The Board moved forward on many other items, including a project to develop housing on four unused District properties, including two in my district. This, and a recent agreement with the city to open schools as parks for the community on the weekends, are priorities of mine that will use public land for the public good in support of students, employees, and families.

Finally, the Board unanimously renewed Superintendent Carvalho’s contract this week. His focused, equity-centered approach has brought historic academic gains to students across the system. I look forward to his steady hand during unsteady times, and to the collaborative development of a new strategic plan to drive progress for students for the next several years.

Onward,

This month, my team and I joined community leaders at the Gabrielino-Tongva Springs tour at University High, VICA’s Local Officeholders Luncheon, Region West’s College & Career Fair, and LAUSD’s Principal for a Day event. We also had the chance to visit schools across the district, including Revere MS, Wilbur ES, Taft HS, SOCES, 3rd St ES, Hancock Park ES, Fairfax HS, Sutter MS and Ingenium Charter. It’s always inspiring to see the incredible work happening in our schools and communities!
