The Week in Review

Happy Friday!

I hope you had a wonderful week. I am grateful to serve you all in the 119th Congress. Read below to see what I’ve been working on this week.

House Passes Resolution Honoring Charlie Kirk

This week, the House passed H. Res. 719, a resolution honoring the life and legacy of Charles “Charlie” James Kirk. Charlie Kirk was an inspiration to an entire generation and will be remembered as someone who changed the course of our country, but his most important role was as a loving husband, father, and devout Christian who shared his faith unapologetically.

Charlie’s assassination was a deliberate, targeted attack meant to silence a conservative voice. This assassination was meant to instill fear. We will respond with courage, and we will double down on the work Charlie dedicated his life to.

I was honored to lead debate on H. Res. 719 on the House Floor. Click the image below to watch as my colleagues and I remember Charlie’s legacy:

I also had the great honor of speaking at a prayer vigil honoring Charlie Kirk in D.C. Click the image below to watch my remarks from the vigil:

Celebrating Constitution Day

On September 17, 1787, the greatest political document ever written was signed in Philadelphia, establishing the framework for our government, safeguarding freedom, and securing freedom for generations.

We honor the wisdom of our Founding Fathers and renew our shared commitment to preserve and protect this enduring charter of freedom.

Happy Constitution Day!

Leading Effort to Preserve States’ Rights

I led a letter to House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Leadership urging them to preserve commonsense federalism for EVs in HOV lanes.

Individual states—not the federal government—should retain the right to address traffic congestion on their highways.

The letter may be read here.

FBI Director Kash Patel Testifies Before
House Judiciary Committee

The Judiciary Committee held a hearing titled “Oversight of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.” FBI Director Kash Patel discussed his work to de-politicize the agency he inherited from former Director Chris Wray. Ahead of the 2020 election and throughout the Biden-Harris regime, the FBI was at the center of the federal government’s campaign to silence American citizens and media outlets. The Judiciary Committee’s oversight uncovered how in 2020, the FBI “pre-bunked” a ground-breaking New York Post story about Biden family influence peddling and primed social media platforms to censor the story less than a month before the 2020 election. The Committee also showed how the Wray FBI pressured social media companies to censor American citizens at the behest of a compromised Ukrainian intelligence agency.

I discussed Chris Wray’s Arctic Frost probe. The probe targeted 92 Republican groups, including the Republican National Committee (RNC), the Republican Attorneys General Association, and Donald Trump-aligned political groups. Charlie Kirk’s Turning Point USA was among the targeted groups.

I appreciated Director Patel’s insight as to how his agency is now working to depoliticize and protect Americans from the weaponization of government. Click the image below to watch my questions:

House Oversight and Government
Reform Committee Hearing

The Oversight Committee held a hearing titled “Oversight of the District of Columbia.” My colleagues and I reaffirmed the Committee’s constitutional responsibility to oversee Washington, D.C. and underscored our commitment to working with local D.C. officials to ensure the nation’s capital is safe and prosperous for all who live in and visit the city. D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, Council Chairman Phil Mendelson, and Attorney General Brian Schwalb have a responsibility to work with Congress and the Trump Administration to address urgent issues to ensure our nation’s capital is safe.

I highlighted the court case The District of Columbia and The State of Maryland v. Engage Armament LLC, et al. D.C. Attorney General Schwalb used this lawsuit to target lawful federally licensed firearm retailers, even though it was clear he never had grounds for a case. In fact, the case was dismissed by a judge who wrote more than ten times that the accusations against the retailers were baseless. Schwalb is now appealing the decision, which will cost the retailers hundreds of thousands more dollars in legal fees.

Attorney General Schwalb chose to go after Americans’ Second Amendment rights instead of prosecuting violent crime in D.C. Click the image below to watch part of my questions:

House Judiciary Subcommittee Hearing

I chaired a Crime and Federal Government Surveillance Subcommittee hearing titled “Unmanned and Unchecked: Confronting the Rising Threat of Malicious Drone Use in America.” Drone incursions are rising in restricted commercial airspace. From January 1, 2025, to June 30, 2025, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) documented 1,025 unauthorized drone events near U.S. airports, a 12.6 percent increase over the same period in 2024. The FAA continues to log over 100 drone sighting reports per month near airports, many involving close calls with commercial flights at major U.S. airports. In 2024, an Associated Press analysis of National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) found that drones accounted for nearly two-thirds of near mid-air collision reports at the country’s busiest airports.

Criminal organizations are increasingly exploiting drones for surveillance, smuggling, and attacks, creating a growing threat to public safety and law enforcement operations. Internationally noted cases include the drone swarm attack on Saudi Arabia’s Abqaiq oil facilities and drone-powered assaults by Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) in conflict zones—demonstrating how relatively cheap, commercial unmanned aerial systems (UAS)—such as consumer-grade drones—can be weaponized en masse.

Mexican drug cartels are increasingly utilizing and deploying drones to facilitate illegal activities along the southwest border. In Laredo, Texas, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and the Department of Defense (DOD) recorded 70 drone incursions in the span of eleven days in July this year. This led to the deployment of U.S. Army Stryker units to augment surveillance and interdiction efforts. Globally, criminal networks have smuggled up to 150-kilogram payloads of narcotics over 50 kilometers using drone systems. Congress must confront and combat malicious drone use across the country and beyond. Click the image below to watch my opening remarks:
