Jan 26 enewsletter j

Dear Friend,

This week, Rep. Nancy Mace introduced a resolution to censure me without a single direct quote from me to back it up. The resolution mischaracterized an interview I gave, where I expressed my condolences to Charlie Kirk’s wife and children and spoke with compassion for his family’s loss. I have never supported political violence, and I have always spoken out against it. Attempts to twist my words into something they are not are deeply harmful not just to me, but to our ability to have honest debates in Congress. I am grateful to my colleagues who voted to table this resolution, and I remain committed to upholding free speech and truth even in moments of deep disagreement.

Co-Sponsoring the Block the Bombs Act

ImageI’m proud to co-sponsor the Block the Bombs Act, which would prohibit the transfer of U.S. made bombs to Israel. These are the very weapons that have been used to destroy homes, schools, and hospitals in Gaza, killing thousands of civilians.

No child should have to fall asleep wondering if their home will still be standing in the morning. Yet U.S. funded bombs are fueling that nightmare every single day. This legislation makes clear that we must stop enabling these atrocities and start centering human rights in our foreign policy. Watch my remarks here

Voting NO on the Defense Authorization Bill

ImageLast week, I voted NO on the National Defense Authorization Act, which hands more than $892 billion to the Pentagon. Year after year, Congress rubber-stamps bloated military budgets while communities here at home struggle to afford rent, medical care, and quality schools. It’s long past time Congress reprioritized investing in housing, healthcare, and education instead of fueling endless wars and military contractors. Our budget should reflect our values, and our values should put people first.

War Powers Resolution

ImageThis week, the Trump Administration once again launched a second unauthorized military strikes on Venezuelan boats in the Caribbean killing civilians without Congressional approval. These bombings are not only unconstitutional, they represent a dangerous escalation that risks dragging us into another endless conflict. I spoke on the House Floor to call out this escalation and to introduce my new War Powers Resolution, which would end hostilities against Venezuela and reaffirm Congress’s constitutional authority to declare war. It is past time for Congress to reassert its power and stop this administration from conducting strikes without Congressional approval. Watch my remarks here

Human Rights Hearing

Image

In the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission, we examined how authoritarian governments twist “transparency” laws to monitor and shut down human rights organizations that dare to challenge their policies. No single U.S. official should have the power to strip nonprofits or NGOs of their status based on false accusations. This kind of unchecked authority silences dissent and punishes those fighting for justice. Congress must resist these authoritarian tactics at home just as we condemn them abroad. The Trump Administration's Labor Policy Agenda

ImageAs Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Workforce Protections, I spoke out against a sweeping set of proposals from the Department of Labor that would weaken more than 60 workplace protections. This would put workers in farms, factories, construction sites, and mines at greater risk.

From narrowing OSHA’s General Duty Clause to stripping pay and safety standards for workers, these changes prioritize corporate convenience over human lives. American workers are not disposable. They deserve safe, fair workplaces and the dignity of returning home alive and uninjured. Congress must reject these rollbacks and protect the hard-won rights of millions of working people. Donna Minter biked for over 3,000 miles in 64 days to raise awareness and support for climate justice. She raised more than $25,000 for Minnesota based climate non-profits along the way. It was an honor to recognize her extraordinary dedication and achievements on the House Floor. Her commitment reminds us that ordinary people can take extraordinary action to fight for our planet and our future. Watch my remarks here.
